Importance of organism and transcriptomesEutreptiella gymnastica is a free-swimming euglenophyte alga commonly found in coastal waters. This marine flagellate occasionally forms massive bloom, which is suggested to make ecologically and environmentally significant contribution to the phytoplankton biomass. The transcriptome of the basally branching euglenophyte E. gymnastica, a distant relative of freshwater euglenophytes including the well-studied model organism Euglena gracilis, gives insight into the evolution of euglenophytes and their plastids of green algal origin.
