Importance of organism and transcriptomes | Heterotrophic nanoflagellates consume bacteria including cyanobacteria as prey, and thus are involved in recycling of nutrients through the microbial loop. This isolate resembles Acanthoeca spectabilis Ellis 1930, but its 18S rRNA sequence is only 94% identical and it is closest to uncultured environmental clones from a Norwegian fjord. Speciation of these organisms in the marine environment is clearly poorly understood. the culture was obtained from the SIO pier (UCSD, La jolla, CA), has been in culture for more than a year and grows on a single Synechococcus strain and contaminating bacteria as food. It also grows on the small alga Ostreococcus choanoflagellates are poorly studied in marine environments, but a genome of a choanoflagellate Monosiga brevicollis has been determined which provides a rich resource for compairsions to this isolate. we would hope to compare the Acanthoeca-like transcriptome during growth with and without synechococcus and to other nanoflagellates growing with and without Synechococcus. |
