Importance of organism and transcriptomesThe strain was isolated from a sandy beach in Prince Edward Island, Canada and reproduces by vegetative cell division. Its 18S rDNA sequence suggests that it is a novel, as yet unnamed, protist that branches deeply within the Bicosoecida, a group of free-living, bactivorous flagellates (e.g., Cafeteria) that commonly occur in various aquatic habitats and play important roles in the food web. In addition to improve our understanding of the eukaryotic tree of life, comparing the transcriptomes of heterotrophic stramenopiles to those of plastid-bearing stramenopiles will provide key insight into the genomic changes accompanying the transition from obligate heterotrophy to phototrophy.
