Importance of organism and transcriptomesC. debilis can attain extraordinary growth rates under favourable growth conditions and exhibits a "boom-and-bust" life cycle by rapidly increasing cell numbers by orders of magnitude and an abrupt termination of the bloom followed mass sedimentation which is accompanied by the formation of resting spores that serve as a seed bank for the initiation of future blooms. This sample is part of a comparative analysis of transcriptomic responses to iron limitation in a number of characteristic diatom species of the Southern Ocean.
