Importance of organism and transcriptomesThraustochytrids are prolific producers of hydrolytic enzymes and important degraders of particulate organic material in marine and estuarine environments. Chemical analyses of lipid production reveal that Thraustochytrium sp. LLF1b synthesizes significant quantities of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (22:6) and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5) important in metazoan health and development. Comparative analyses will significantly expand our knowledge of the genetic and metabolic potential of osmoheterotrophic protists in the marine environment and allow identification of genes associated with specific ecological niches.
