Importance of organism and transcriptomesDinoflagellates are a key component of the eukaryotic phytoplankton in all of the world?s oceans. Despite their importance, mechanistic understanding of their physiological responses to important environmental changes, such as nutrient loading remains relatively poorly understood, since very little genetic information is available due to the immense size of their genomes. Transcriptome sequencing will provide significant insight into the genomic complexity of this group and a foundation upon which to explore the linkages between genomic and phenotypic responses in response to environmental changes that threaten coastal ecosystems.
