Importance of organism and transcriptomesAlexandrium tamarense is a model organism for dinoflagellate systems biology because of its relatively small genome (among dinoflagellates), toxin production, and high rates of production of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), the precursor to the climate-active gas DMS, which has been implicated in the formation of climate cooling aerosols and clouds. Transcriptomes from axenic versus bacterized A. tamarense blooms will be used to determine the impact of bacterial communities on phytoplankter physiology as well as the production, cycling, and transformation of carbon and DMSP.
