Importance of organism and transcriptomes | Blooms of toxic phytoplankton can negatively impact coastal ecosystems and economies through poisoning events that induce high mortality rates in fish (Landsberg 2002), birds (Shumway et al. 2003; Jessup et al. 2009), and illness in humans (Van Dolah et al. 2001). Heterosigma akashiwo is a common, estuarine HAB species that induces mortality in wild and aquaculture fish. We have been investigating the physiological and behavioral basis for H. akashiwo success and found that an interplay between a broad halotolerance and toxicity to some heterotrophic protists is key to predicting this HABs population dynamics (Fredrickson et al. 2009, Menden-Deuer et al. 2010, Harvey & Menden-Deuer 2011, Strom et al. in prep). This transcriptome will provide us with the opportunity to investigate the genetic basis for the halotolerance and toxicity of this strain, compare it to another strain and investigate toxicity and ecology in-situ to support predictive modeling of HAB occurrences. |
