Importance of organism and transcriptomesPessonella has been placed in the Dactylopodida (Amoebozoa) based on morphology (Smirnov et al. 2005) and molecular data place this taxon close to the Dactylopodids, but without support (Tekle et al. 2008; Lahr et al, submitted). Pessonella has a distinctive outer membrane covering like many of the Thecamoebida, but members of the Thecamoebida do not seem to be closely related to Pessonella sp. in molecular reconstructions (Smirnov et al. 2005; Tekle et al. 2008; Lahr et al, submitted). However, only a few molecular data (ssu-rDNA and actin) exist for this lineage. The isolate at ATCC was taken from a lobster, though it can also be grown as a bacterivore in standard media.
