Importance of organism and transcriptomes | Based on morphology, Stygamoeba regulata has been placed either in the Lobosea and Rhizopodia (Smirnov 1996), but was further considered Incertae sedis (Smirnov et al. 2005). Available molecular data (SSU-rDNA and four actin paralogs) are unable to further resolve the Incertae sedis position of this taxon (Lahr, Katz et al. In prep). Both described species are marine with lobose pseudopods and remarkably plastic morphology, including a leaf-like flattened stage transforming into an elongated, long-tapered pseudopodial stage. Stygamoeba regulata appears to be closely related to a recently isolated new marine genus Vermistella collected in Antarctica (Moran et al. 2007), but additional molecular genetic data are needed to clarify the phylogenetic status of these amoebae. Little more is known about the ecology and physiology of this taxon, though the genus can be found in near-shore sediments (Butler and Rogerson 2000). The strain available at ATCC was deposited by Tom Nerad, who is the former director of the protistology collections. |
