Importance of organism and transcriptomesOxyrrhis marina is a widely studied heterotrophic protists (e.g. see recent special issue in Journal of Plankton Research). Unlike most other heterotrophic protists, this species is easily maintained in culture, grows to high abundances and feeds on a wide spectrum of phytoplankton prey species. These O. m. cultures that have been starved for several weeks and recently fed cultures to s to identify gene expression associated with active feeding.
