Importance of organism and transcriptomes | Many pennate diatoms in the genus Pseudo-nitzschia have the potential to produce a potent neurotoxin, domoic acid (DA), which bioaccumulates through trophic transfer and can consequently devastate marine mammal and bird populations. To date, nothing is known regarding the genetic basis for DA production, although there are many physiological triggers of DA production including limitation by macronutrients (e.g. silicate (Si)). Recent studies have shown that CO2 levels likely to be encountered at the end of this century further exacerbate DA production in Si-limited cultures of Pseudo-nitzschia fraudulenta, suggesting an interesting co-regulation of DA synthesis by both Si limitation and increasing CO2 levels. Comparison of the gene complement expressed in Pseudo-nitzschia fraudulenta in DA producing conditions with the draft genome of Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries, a species that has also been shown to produce DA, should help elucidate genes unique to the Pseudo-nitzschia genus and those important for DA production. Data from these transcriptomes will also be relevant for interpreting how diatoms are likely to respond to both environmental fluctuations of nutrients (in this case Si) and CO2 levels corresponding to present and future climates. |
