Importance of organism and transcriptomesProteomonas sulcata is a cryptophyte alga. Cryptophytes are unusual among secondary plastid-containing algae in that they still possess the nucleus (nucleomorph) and cytoplasm of their algal endosymbionts in a highly reduced and simplified form. Investigating the nuclear genome of these organisms will improve our understanding of secondary endosymbiosis and the integration of their respective hosts and endosymbionts at the genetic, biochemical, and cellular levels. A better understanding of the relationships between cryptophytes and other red algal secondary plastid-bearing organisms will also be possible.
